An IAEA international symposium this month in Spain, from 13-17 December, brings together waste experts from around the world to assess the global situation and share experience.

The IAEA Board of Governors has concluded discussions on the implementation of the safeguards in the Republic of Korea. The Board, which considered a report on the matter from IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, agreed on a conclusion issued by Board Chair Ingrid Hall of Canada.

At a ceremony in Germany this month, the IAEA was awarded the Berlin Peace Clock Prize in honour of the Agency's contributions to global peace and security. IAEA Deputy Director General Werner Burkart accepted the award 8 November on the IAEA's behalf, describing it as a "great tribute" to the IAEA as the world´s Atoms for Peace organization.

Much progress has been made, but it will take the better part of a decade before all the world´s civil research reactors can be converted to run on fuel that poses lower proliferation concerns. Among the biggest challenges is developing the types of uranium fuel that converted reactors require. More than 60 civilian research reactors worldwide still run on weapons-grade high-enriched uranium (HEU) fuels and are targeted for conversion over the next ten years.

The IAEA has been involved for more than twenty years in supporting international nuclear non-proliferation efforts associated with reducing the amount of highly enriched uranium (HEU) in international commerce. IAEA projects and activities have directly supported the Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors (RERTR) programme, as well as directly associated efforts to return research reactor fuel to the country where it was originally enriched.

The United Nations General Assembly affirmed its confidence in the IAEA and urged global cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, following the annual address by IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei. States adopted a resolution that strongly supported the Agency´s "indispensable role" in the area of technology transfer to developing countries and in nuclear safety, verification and security.
